Making coloured rice

Colours make normal (/boring!) items much more fun. Any excuse to colour things, and we generally do! I wanted to make some coloured rice for various projects, so I thought I’d try the following – 1/2 fill a bowl with just boiled water and a very generous squirt of vinegar. Then add in the food colouring (one/bowl) – you need quite a lot to make a difference. Then add the rice and allow to soak for an hour or two. Then drain the rice and spread out to dry.

I found that the red and yellow food colouring worked really well and the colours were very vibrant. The blue worked but was a bit pale. The green looked very much like the yellow, so I tried orange but it just looked like pale red. It probably depends on what brand/type of food colouring you use. But for our purposes, we were happy with a variety of colours!

Inquisitive

Hi! I’m Claire, stay-at-home-mum to two gorgeous boys and a lovely girl. My kids are energetic, spirited and full-of-life, and they certainly keep me on my toes. I love spending time with them and seeing them learn and experience new things – I hope that this blog will give you ideas to try out on the children in your life!
