Counting with Cheerios!

My toddler (18mo) loves a number placemat we have. Whenever he sees numbers, he says ‘six’, or occasionally ‘two’. Not necessarily at the right numbers, but he is getting there. Small counters are still a no-go for him as he loves to put everything in his mouth. Edible counters though – perfect! So I came up with this Cheerios number game for him.

I took five muffin cases, and filled them with the correct number of cheerios and put them on the corresponding number (for numbers 1-5). I then counted them loudly with him and tried to get him to repeat the number back to me.

We then had fun trying to put the cheerios on the pictures for numbers 6-10. Occasionally a cheerio would go missing as it was consumed, but hey-ho, I had lots of them! We counted as we went along.

He really had so much fun with this, and it was so quick I will definitely do it again.
