Fun with ice and salt!

We had such fun with ice and salt! I froze some water in various different sized bowls and then tipped them upside down on some trays. I gave the boys some salt, food colouring mixed with water, and pipettes. They sprinkled the salt on the ice and watched as it melted the ice and created little ravines. The colour then made beautiful patters on the ice as it sunk into the troughs. They experimented with pouring different amounts of salt onto the ice. True experimentation! And they kept at it for ages!

The science behind it…

Salt lowers the freezing point of ice, meaning that sprinkling the salt onto the ice will cause it to start to melt. That’s why it’s so useful for roads on icy days.

Inquisitive

Hi! I’m Claire, stay-at-home-mum to two gorgeous boys and a lovely girl. My kids are energetic, spirited and full-of-life, and they certainly keep me on my toes. I love spending time with them and seeing them learn and experience new things – I hope that this blog will give you ideas to try out on the children in your life!
