Rainbow skittles!

This is such an easy experiment to do with the kids, and the results are so pretty! Simply get a bag of skittles, and a large bowl with a flat bottom. Put the skittles in singles or pairs of colours evenly spaced around the bottom of the bowl, as in the picture above.

Then get your child to slow pour some water into the bowl – aim for the centre so as not to disturb the skittles. Put in enough to just cover the skittles. Then wait and watch the beautiful pattern appear!

My preschooler thought this was amazing! Once the colours had met in the middle, he experimented with swirling the water around to see what would happen. We talked about how the water dissolved the colours and caused them to spread towards the middle. For more about the science, read here.

Hi! I’m Claire, stay-at-home-mum to two gorgeous boys and a lovely girl. My kids are energetic, spirited and full-of-life, and they certainly keep me on my toes. I love spending time with them and seeing them learn and experience new things – I hope that this blog will give you ideas to try out on the children in your life!
